Topic: Understanding international business through emerging market multinationals
International business is a widespread and critical issue, not only in the economic sense but also because it fundamentally shapes our daily lives. However, the main actors of international business today are well-established multinational companies (MNCs), most of which are from advanced economies, such as the US, European countries, as well as Japan. Having those established MNCs already so taken for granted in our lives, it is tricky to tell how MNCs emerge, evolve, and become established from them. In light of this, this course aims to develop students' understanding of international business by focusing on emerging market multinational companies (EMNCs). EMNCs refer to MNCs originating from emerging markets, such as the BRICS (i.e., Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). Given that EMNCs are usually young, they offer an ideal context to understand the growth of MNCs. In this lecture, we will not only focus on the unique challenges and advantages of EMNCs but also extend this uniqueness to understand international business phenomena in general.
