Course Outline and Method

"Kyo-yaki," or Kyoto's traditional ceramics, began in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, in the latter part of the 16th century. It incorporates skills and techniques developed in kilns all over Japan, as well as techniques imported from China and Korea.
This course of 15 lessons enables students to gain hands-on experience of the world of Kyo-yaki. Classes take place on Saturdays at the Fujihira Pottery studios situated in Gojo-zaka, an area renowned for its ceramics. Students will be given an opportunity to use their work in a tea ceremony.

Introductory Stage: Students are encouraged to get used to the feel of the clay and make a relatively simple piece, such as a small Japanese tea cup.
Applied Stage: Students make familiar tableware such as plates, coffee cups etc.
Free Creation Stage: Students make an item of their choice.

Student Attainment Objectives

○ To understand the content and process involved in a ceramic work's completion
○ To develop fundamental ceramic skills
○ To be able to create a ceramic work from their own conceptualized shape or design
○ To understand the traits of pottery's raw material, clay, by shaping and touching it
○ To develop an interest in Japanese traditional arts (tea ceremony, Kyoto culture, etc.) by experiencing ancient Japanese aesthetics through ceramics

Advice to Students on Study and Research Methods

The ceramic-making tasks will be announced in advance. Thinking about the shape and design you will make and having an image of it in your mind before the day of the class will make the creation process smoother.
It is less important to acquire knowledge of pottery basics than to touch the clay and experience the fun, the difficulty, and the depth of making ceramics. It is very important that you be able to feel Japanese aesthetics and culture through your experience with ceramics.

Other Comments

There are many galleries and museums in Kyoto and the Kansai area that have exhibits or collections on Kyo-yaki and ceramics from Japan and other countries. If you are interested in the ceramics you see online or in books, it would be very beneficial to go see the real thing.
