Course Outline and Method

This course focuses on enhancing students’ knowledge and understanding of different cultures around the world. In class, students will learn about lifestyles and customs of various different countries, and, by comparing them with those of Japan, they will consider the similarities and differences. Some (less than half) of the sessions will be conducted by using the media (Zoom) during the semester.

この授業のテーマは、「世界を英語で巡る旅」である。インド、韓国、フランス、エジプトなど、世界15カ国の文化や歴史を紹介するDVD教材を用いながら、さまざまな国の事情を学ぶとともに、地元の人々のインタビューを通して、世界各地で使われている英語に触れる。また、授業で扱う国についてのさらなる調査、発表、討論も取り入れていく。そして、自分の興味のある国に関して、比較文化に関わるテーマを見つけてリサーチを行い、学期末にプレゼンテーションを行う。アジアから、ヨーロッパ、アフリカ、南アメリカまでの旅を通して世界に対する視野を広げ、さまざまな文化についての理解を深めていきたい。また、これまで毎年ゲストスピーカーを招いており、今年度もその機会を設ける予定なので、ぜひ楽しみに参加してほしい。

Student Attainment Objectives

(1)　映像と読みものを通して、世界のさまざまな国の文化について理解を深める。
(2)　世界各地で話されるインタビューの英語を聞き取り、理解する。
(3)　授業で取りあげる国に関する背景知識を学び、視野を広げる。
(4)　自分で比較文化に関わるテーマを見つけ、リサーチを行い、発表し、レポートにまとめる。

Class Format

対面授業を基本とするが、メディア授業を2回程度（第4週、第8週）取り入れる予定である。

Recommendations for Private Study

授業外でもさまざまな国の文化に関心をもち、情報収集を心がけてほしい。教科書以外でも、よい動画や資料などがあればクラスで共有していきたい。

授業スケジュールのキーワード欄に挙げたのは、教材のほんの一部（短いリーディングの部分）である。本書に付随したDVDは著者が実際に一つ一つの国を訪れて撮影したものであり、それぞれの国の特徴的な側面がうまく描かれているので、まずは楽しみながらDVD全体を視聴してみてほしい。

Advice to Students on Study and Research Methods

比較文化のリサーチをする際には、まず自分の関心のあるテーマを設定し、そのテーマに関してリサーチする項目を考え、同じ項目について２国以上を比較することが大切である。テーマは自由なので、自分の好きなことについて楽しんで追究してほしい。
なお、上記の授業スケジュールは tentative なものなので、受講生の興味に合わせて柔軟に対応する。また、ゲストスピーカーの来訪日の調整などで若干変更になる可能性がある。
