文化人類学の概論を講義する。次の三点に留意して授業をおこなう。第一に、国際関係学部で学ぶさまざまな学問との関わり、とくに重要な歴史学との関係で文化人類学の位置を考える。第二に、文化人類学の考え方を、ヨーロッパの思想史の中で位置づける。むろん、他の地域の文化にも随時ふれる。第三に、諸君が生活している、日本の文化を、文化人類学から考える。文化人類学を、単なる珍しいもの好き、未開探しではなく、鏡に映った自分（の文化）の姿を見る方法と考える。

他の授業との関連を常に考える。政治学、経済学、法学などの社会科学、あるいは自然科学との関連性。
授業時にあげた参考書を読み、理解を深める。特に古典に目を向ける。
事典、辞書、論文、書籍をつねに読む習慣を付ける。
