Course Outline and Method

This course will be conducted in English (Japanese support available), focusing on various cultural elements. Through discussions, students will learn how to communicate and express their opinions in English and gain knowledge of cultural diversity.

Student Attainment Objectives

Students will increase their cultural competence, knowledge, and motivation for cross-cultural interactions. Students will improve their ability to express themselves in English.

Recommended Preparatory Course

This course will be conducted in English (main) and Japanese (upon necessity), so students should be able to perform English proficiency equivalent to TOEFL ITP 400/ TOEFL iBT 32/ TOEIC 380 / IELTS 4.5 or above. Please remember the following points to make the course beneficial to all the participants. (1) Try to use the language that you are learning, (2) Try to use your mother tongue (if it is English or Japanese) in an understandable way to your counterparts, and (3) Try to be active and collaborative in your learning process.

Class Format

Classes will be face-to-face. If there are online courses, announcements will be made on Manaba Course News.

Recommendations for Private Study

1. Please complete the pre-class assignments. As these assignments are contents of discussions in class, if you wish to practice Japanese you can submit the assignments in Japanese.
2. The submission of Feedback after each class is counted towards the Attendance grades.
3. To prepare for the group presentation, it is better to have the contacts of your teammates.

1. For online classes, the attendance will only be taken if we can see you, so please turn on your camera.
2. Class participation attitude is also included in the attendance grades, so please join actively.

Advice to Students on Study and Research Methods

1. Do not submit the same work (presentation/research essay...etc.) for two different classes you are receiving credit for. If you wish to present/write about the same topic as in another class, please email/talk with me in advance.
2. Do not copy-paste anything from any website/article in your essay, even if you have included the website/article in your reference list. Make sure to paraphrase or summarize it in your own words before submitting.
