Course Outline and Method

[Class Theme] Analyzing Social Dilemmas

This seminar will be examining social dilemmas we have faced now, focusing on East Asia. Each seminar has a specific theme to consider by using active leaning methods, such as group presentation and discussion, thereby grasping the causes of social dilemmas and seeking how to solve them. English is mainly used while Japanese can be supportively used during each session.

All the seminars will be conducted through Zoom.

Student Attainment Objectives

1. Considering the causes and mechanisms of social dilemmas by your own.
2. Cultivating group discussion skills.
3. Conducting group presentations.

Class Format

During the suspension period of BCP, classes will be as described in BCP levels 0-2.

All the classes will be conducted on Zoom.

*The Liberal Arts Seminar will be offered online for a total of 15 sessions.
Students may take the course from any environment where they can concentrate and participate in class.
Classrooms are prepared only at the campus where the person in charge of the class belongs.
You will need to bring your own PC and earphones if you choose to take the course in the classroom.

Your final grade will be calculated according to the following process.

Usual Performance Score (70%): Attendance, Attitude for group discussions and presentations, and communication papers.

Reports (30%): a 2000-4000 word report about a social dilemma that you find interesting will be submitted.

Grade Evaluation Method (Note)

*Usual performance score will be gone when you are absent four times or more.
*Students will have to submit the answers for assignments, such as communication papers and quizzes, through Manaba+r. Please make sure that students should do two quizzes or more out of three ones given in this course. When students do just one quiz out of three, the 30 points for attendance and attitudes can be lost.
*A 2000-4000 word essay about a social dilemma you are interested in should be submitted.

Advice to Students on Study and Research Methods

This class is open for the students with the following English ability: a TOEFL ITP®test score between 480 and 530, a TOEFL iBT®test score between 55 and 71, a TOEIC®test score between 580 and 630, an IELTS score above 5.0, or equivalent.
