Course Outline and Method

This course takes Mattelart's 'Mapping World Communication: War, Progress, Culture' as its focus; this work looks back at the history of 'communication', traces the genealogy of theoretical thinking on the subject and offers a critical assessment of the 'information age' and the role of communication in globalisation.

During the course, students will read through 'Mapping World Communication' chapter by chapter and discuss the ideas Mattelart puts forward, the content of the book itself will be complemented by other readings where useful. Students will be asked to read, summarise and present the sections of the readings assigned to them (or their group) each week.

Course sessions will consist of student-led presentations and discussions on the weekly material.

Keywords: communication, media theory, globalisation

Student Attainment Objectives

Students who attend this course will gain a knowledge of the development of worldwide systems of mass communication from the 18th century, they will also be introduced to developments in the ways governments, bureaucracies and academics have tried to manage, describe and understand these developments.

This work has a particular emphasis on the relationship of national communication systems to the conduct of war, students will have the opportunity to learn about how international conflict, and cooperation, has influenced the development of systems of communications/media governance.

Students will have the opportunity to practise reading and summarising academic texts, presenting their ideas and opinions, and participating in group discussions.

"WAR"

These classes will deal with chapters 1 to 5 of the work. These focus on the development of 'communication' (in a broad sense) since the 18th century; the growth of state bureaucracies, mass politics and changes in the nature of war, and how all of these relate to changes in the technologies of communications and their governance.

7~10

"PROGRESS"

Chapter 6 to 8: Looking at the post-WW2 developments in communications - television and 'development theory', 'media imperialism', and the 'free flow' vs regulation debate. (There will also be a relevant film in week 8 or 9)

11~14

"CULTURE"

Chapters 9 to 11 (plus 'Conclusion'): These (highly theoretical) chapters look at theories of globalisation, the growth of a worldwide economy and the tensions between nations and global actors in the fields of governance and communications.
