Course Outline and Method
In this course, we will examine four of the most common “isms” seen as obstacles to world peace and consider how policy decisions might minimize their negative impact. The four “isms” are racism, nationalism, religious intolerance, and sexism. We will consider the ideas of violence and nonviolence, how they are represented in mass media, and how such representations may affect our perceptions. By the end of the course, you should have a better understanding of the concepts of violence, nonviolence, representation, and power.
This course is student-focused, with short introductory lectures followed by weekly pair or group work. This course is open to both PS and CRPS students.
