Course Outline and Method

This course introduces the concept, technical topics, and typical examples of "Digital Archives," which were initially proposed in Japan in the late 90s and later distributed worldwide. "Digital Archives" is a Japanese-English term and is nearly synonymous with "Digital Cultural Heritage" or "Digital Heritage." These are approaches to applying modern multimedia information technologies to the humanities, especially to culture, arts, and history. This is a modern and globalized tool and method of intensifying our mutual understanding of other cultures by distributing information about the history, culture, and art in every part of the world to researchers and the general public. In this course, students will learn the state-of-the-art technologies in ICT fields such as computer graphics, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and their applications in digital archives. Basic core subjects will also be explained understandably for students without technological backgrounds.

Student Attainment Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:
1. Understand the importance of digital archives as new ways of preserving tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
2. Learn the basic knowledge of ICTs and how they are applied to digital archives.
3. Be able to explore history, culture, and arts with digital archives.
