授業の概要と方法

This course focuses on international relations and regional development.

The concept of region has widely differing definitions, including districts, cities, provinces, states, groups of neighbouring states, or the Global South. Regional development is generally defined as the effort to reduce regional disparities (e.g., rich and poor) by supporting economic activities in regions.
In this course, we regard the global society as a whole, studying the historic development towards an increasingly globalised world through various analytical lenses such as history and international relations.

Students will be asked to give short presentations and join discussion. Further, there will be occasional mini-tests or take-home exams.

受講生の到達目標

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

1. be able to critically think about historic development and globalisation and be able to use key concepts of international relations.
2. be able to apply the international relations concepts to real world events.
3. be able to evaluate international relations and regional development debates.

授業外学習の指示

It is absolutely essential to read assigned readings for this class because the class will deepen the contents through lectures and interactive discussions.
Assigned readings are essentially homework that must be completed. Depending on reading proficiency, it should take about 60-90min to finish assigned readings.
At the end of each class, the instructor will be providing the assignments. Students are expected to think and prepare answers and bring in to the next class. Students should review the material provided during the class, and make contact with the instructor if necessary.

Each lecture part of the class will list recommended literature for self study that allows students to deepen their understanding of topics.

This course covers topics related to international relations and regional development, which are frequently subject of news. By relating daily news of international events to course contents, students should be able to understand what kind of international relations theories are applied in international politics.
