現代日本語に関する言語学的な基礎的知識（現代日本語の音声学、音韻論、形態論、統語論、意味論など）を身につけるとともに、言語を分析的に観察する能力を育み、日本語習得への意識レベルを高めることを目的とする。

・統語論、音韻論、意味論、社会言語学など言語学諸分野の基本的な概念を理解する。
・日本語のデータを言語学的な観点から分析することができるようになる。
