Course Outline and Method

Welfare system is strongly related with economic development and social change. This course, Social Welfare Policies, offers an opportunity to explore the transformation of the family as a welfare provider and its relationship with other welfare providing actors in Japan as well as in some other developed and developing countries. There are three main issues that are focused on in the course: "family and unpaid care work", "welfare states" and "poverty". Students will learn the social process for producing family-models in the welfare settings; some theories of welfare states; and different reasons for poverty between men and women. All lectures and discussions are performed in English.

Student Attainment Objectives

The final objective of this course is finding out a clue to restructure current welfare systems against our declining birthrate and aging society.
