Course Outline and Method

Where does new technology come from?
The development of new information and media technology requires skills and and knowledge from a wide selection of fields including engineering, design, and behavioural science. This course will emphasize the human aspects of information and media technology, with emphasis on how human factors influence design practices. While our central topic is information technology, we will draw upon subjects such as psychology, anthropology, design, and art, as needed.
The first part of this course deals with fundamentals of the field known as "Human Computer Interaction" abbreviated HCI.
In the second part, we will examine case studies in several active sub-fields of HCI research.

Student Attainment Objectives

• understand the importance of human factors in the design of new technology
• learn about fundamental theory and practice of human computer interaction design
• develop research and presentation skills which will be useful for post-graduate study
