授業の概要と方法

Migration is considered to be one the defining features of today’s world. This course is designed to provide students with an overview of diverse issues shaping contemporary international migration. It examines trends and patterns pertaining to different types of migration phenomena, their causes and effects, and how actors at different levels (national, international, transnational etc) seek to respond to these. Acquiring an understanding of these issues is a precondition for developing an informed perspective on international migration, which continues to be a highly contested and politicised subject around the world.
Before registering for this course, please take note of the course evaluation method (explained in the designated section below) and that this course requires substantial amount of reading on complex topics for each class (see the course schedule section; additional readings maybe designated in class). If you experience difficulties with academic reading and writing on advanced topics, you will likely struggle to pass this course. Finally, please note that students taking this course will be required to buy a designated textbook (see textbook section below).

受講生の到達目標

This course aims to equip students with the knowledge base for contextualising migration phenomena in a wider framework of issues. On successful completion of this course, students should be able to understand:
- the trends and patterns that characterise different migration phenomena,
- the potential effects of migration on host and sending societies, and
- the key themes in academic/policy discussions/debates pertaining to migration.
