Course Outline and Method

This is an advanced-level modeling and simulation course for practicing technology and innovation management. The objective of this course is to provide students with advanced modeling and simulation techniques using system dynamics to evaluate the long-term impact of new technology diffusion on social, economic, and environmental systems. The lectures will be given in face-to-face classes.

Student Attainment Objectives

Students will acquire the ability to write research papers using system dynamics.

Recommended Preparatory Course

Familiarity with intermediate level system dynamics.

Course Schedule

Lecture/Instructor(When there are multiple instructors) Theme
Keyword, References and Supplementary Information
Module 1

Introduction

Explain the purpose, methods, schedule, and evaluation criteria of the lecture. Review the basic knowledge and techniques of system dynamics.

Module 2

Systems Analysis

Applying systems thinking to analyze the long-term impact of new technology diffusion on social, economic, and environmental systems. Learn how to draw a causal loop diagram.

Module 3

Research paper review

Learn how to search, read and comprehend the general structure of system dynamics research papers. Students investigate and present the papers of their own interest in the class.

Module 4

Individual research project

Students conduct an individual research project using system dynamics.

Module 5

Final presentation

Summarize the research project and present it in the class.

Class Format

Face-to-face classes (BCP Level 1 and Level 2) will be used as the basis, moving to live-streamed classes (BCP Level 3 and Level 4) when necessary.

Recommendations for Private Study

Students are required to conduct an individual research project in the second half of the lecture.

Grade Evaluation Method

Kind Percentage Grading Criteria etc.
Final Examination (Written)

Report Examination
(A report to be submitted by the unified deadline)

Exams and/or Reports other than those stated above, and Continuous Assessment
(Evaluation of Everyday Performance in Class)
100

Individual research project: 100%

Grade Evaluation Method (Note)

If we move to live-streamed classes, final presentation will also be done online and graded.

Advice to Students on Study and Research Methods

Students need to bring their personal computer for in-class modeling and simulation. Please download and install the following simulation software prior to the lecture. Vensim® Personal Learning Edition (Vensim®PLE) by Ventana Systems Inc.
