授業の概要と方法

What is “social justice”? What caused social injustices in the long process of globalization—the process of human movements, networking, and intensifying interconnectivity—, and what efforts were made to find a solution? First, we familiarize ourselves with the socio-historical contexts of a few Enlightenment thinkers and their political philosophies for “social justice.” Then, we focus on the case of the United States, whose founders embraced Enlightenment ideals. Hoisting the banner of freedom, democracy, and capitalism, the new republic engaged in settler colonialism and imperialism. By the end of the nineteenth century, the United States became the world-leading industrial power, composed of diverse peoples. Through the two world wars, it became the nation most influential in shaping the globalization process in the twentieth century. By taking women’s perspectives, we examine major historical events in their respective socio-historical contexts and explore the elusive and conflicting workings of gender, class, race/ethnicity, ideology, sex, age, etc., in American struggles for “social justice.” We discuss similarities and differences among American, Japanese, and/or the society of your interest and ask what lessons we can learn from American examples and how we can use the knowledge to better our communities and the world today.
Students are expected to participate in and contribute to the class discussions and presentations. The class will be conducted in English. Only when necessary, supplementary explanations in Japanese will be provided.

受講生の到達目標

Upon completing this course, students should be able to grasp the Euro-American-based key concept of social justice and the historical overview of globalizing Euro-American-based women’s movements to achieve it. The class will provide opportunities to develop the ability to identify, analyze, and criticize various phenomena of social injustices and globalizing efforts for justice from multiple perspectives. Also, students should be able to acquire cross-cultural communication skills through group/class discussions and presentations.
