Course Outline and Method

The aim of English for International Studies is to develop a high-level command of
English, which will allow students to deepen their knowledge of international
relations. In EIS IV, students engage in an active learning process through an
integrated approach to the four skills using materials related to international
relations with particular focus on language output skills in a multicultural context.
They will learn academic writing skills with APA style and write literature reviews,
research proposals, reports and papers. Formative evaluation is performed through
in-class writings and two or more of the above documents, based on a rubric that
targets writing skills.
Face to face classes unless COVID provisions are invoked.
The main effort this semester is to prepare a well-written academic paragraph.

Student Attainment Objectives

1. Students will enhance their academic integrity by learning
how to cite works and write reference lists.
2. Students will be able to summarize facts and arguments
related to international society and write reports and
papers after researching the issues.
3. Students will be able to write about international societal
facts and make logical, persuasive assertions within a
culturally diverse context.
By the end of this semester, student's will have developed their knowledge of paragraph writing, including grammar and paragraph structure, signals and transition words, topics sentence construction, the use of a controlling idea, and supporting ideas leading to a conclusion. Students will also write a definition paragraph, a process paragraph, an opinion paragraph, and a narrative paragraph.

Recommendations for Private Study

If students are keen to practise the art of writing, they should consider keeping an English diary. Each day, they should identify a single topic of interest. Drawing on the topic, they should write a topic sentence (containing a topic and controlling idea), and, over the course of a single day, write two or three sentences that reflect the controlling idea. Constant practice will lead to recognition of the simplicity of writing a paragraph when one focuses on a topic and a controlling idea. The controlling idea will be explained in the first unit.
Once the topic and controlling idea are mastered, the idea of a paragraph is very simple. A paragraph is a short, written piece about a single idea, limited by the controlling idea, and focused on a single topic.

Grade Evaluation Method

A grade will be assigned according to the prescribed characteristics of each paragraph submitted - definition, process, opinion, and narrative. Review tests will be in-class tests conducted in Weeks 9 and 15. The aim of the tests is to focus attention on key aspects of great paragraph writing. Both tests are open-book tests to be completed in class time and uploaded to Manaba.

Other Comments

PLAGIARISM is a serious form of academic dishonesty. If it's not your idea, you must always tell us whose idea it is. Use citations in the body of your text and a bibliography or reference list at the end of your written work. If necessary, this will be explained in class.
Plagiarism, when identified, may lead to serious consequences, including failure.
