Course Outline and Method

This course is linked to global/local special projects of Introduction to On-site Research 1 and 2 which are offered in second and third semester respectively, and is based on the philosophy of community exchange-based learning, which is to research areas with a global perspective. Classes are divided into two categories as follows: 1) conduct fieldwork in a target area; and 2) invite students from local universities in the area to conduct joint research. The former classes will take place in summer, and the latter mainly during summer and spring breaks to avoid schedule conflicts with regular classes.
This course consists of three phases below.
1. Preparation of a fieldwork proposal: Community-level issues vary whether the area is in a developed or developing country. Your instructor will check if your proposal has a proper theme, scientific research methods, and ethical research perspectives, and if it is feasible after taking into consideration periods of stay and follow-up sessions.
2. Fieldwork: Conduct fieldwork on policy issues in the target area (about five days in total, excluding travel days).
3. Follow-up sessions: Work on a report, and preparations for a workshop and others.

Student Attainment Objectives

1. Learn skills in defining problems and then analyzing them through conducting fieldwork.
2. Working with students from local universities and the staff from the accepting organizations, extract common problems and then analyze them through researches. Furthermore, acquire a comparative perspective.
