Course Outline and Method

This small-group seminar course is for students in their third semester who developed awareness of specific topics through Introduction to Academic Research in their first semester. Based on the awareness, students will continue the same project with the same members as Introduction to On-site Research 1 offered in the spring semester, in principle.
This course aims to train students to gain skills described in the process below. The course shares the above goal with Introduction to On-site Research 1 offered in the spring semester.

1. In principle, students will work in the same research group year-round in both this course and Introduction to On-site Research 1 offered in the spring semester. Students will conduct research on the group theme in an effective, planned way and based on a consensus built among group members.
2. Students will share knowledge relevant to the theme among group members by studying materials and other means.
3. Students will undertake fieldwork if possible and necessary, and learn the basics and etiquette of fieldwork such as the following firsthand: how to determine and contact research subjects; how to conduct interviews and other types of research while following etiquette; how to manage and compile collected data; and how to send a report and extend gratitude to the subjects following the fieldwork.
4. Students will write their report based on statistics and databases, statistical data analysis, and hypothesis testing, depending on the theme.
5. Students will summarize the outcome of the group work into their report by discussing with other group members and keeping structure and expressions in mind.
The above process provides an example and may differ from that of each group in focuses and structure.
Students will submit the Project Report II as the culmination of the project at the end of the semester after giving a midterm presentation.

In this course, absences and tardiness will be handled as follows.
① If you are absent four or more times (four classes) in one semester, you will receive a grade of F.
② About tardiness
- If you enter the classroom within 20 minutes of the start of class, you will be considered "late."
- If you enter the classroom more than 20 minutes after the start of class, you will be considered "absent."
- If you are "late" twice, it will be considered one "absence.
