Course Outline and Method
Information for “+R-Jugyo” will be posted on the “Course News” on manaba+R by April 1. Be sure to check the “Course News” on manaba+R.
This course investigates the origins, roles and practices of civil society in the context of international development efforts. Building on a multi-disciplinary approach, the course will emphasize actor-oriented perspectives in the wide field of international development. Attention will be paid to the plurality of actors nestled within the umbrella concept of ‘Civil Society’. Key contemporary questions will be addressed: the role of global civil society in fostering ‒ and sometimes hampering ‒ social change; the institutional and financial constraints faced by civil society organizations (CSOs) (non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, social movements, etc.) and the strategic choices attached to such constraints; the global divide between Northern and Southern CSOs; and a wide range of other ethical, political, economic, social and environmental issues linked to the multiple roles played by contemporary civil society. The later part of the course will move to students’ team presentation sessions on issues related to CSO development interventions, concluded with the submission of their project paper.
Student Attainment Objectives
- explain key concepts, actors, practices, and structures related to global civil society and development;
- to explain CSOs interventions in various development issues weekly covered in the class; and
- to critically analyze a selected development issue in a team-based research and presentation.

Cautionary note on AI use:
This course does not prohibit the use of generative AI, but plagiarism is strictly prohibited. Generative AI plagiarism is detected using multiple software tools. When plagiarism is identified, the student is required to correct the detected passage. Failure to make corrections may result in an F grade. Even with the correction, the student's marks/grade will be lowered. In the event that there is a need to demonstrate that AI detection occurred due to grammar checking rather than plagiarism, you must retain and present all input and output data stored in the AI tool. It is also advisable to store the original Word text. Using ChatGPT for grammar checks is more favorable than Grammarly, as ChatGPT automatically stores all input and output data, whereas Grammarly does not. If you fail to provide evidence, your work may be considered plagiarized, leading to a reduction in your course grade, possibly resulting in an F grade.
