Course Outline and Method

This course discusses various challenges as well as organizational and managerial approaches for managing the modern Multinational Enterprise (MNE) within the context of a dynamically changing, interconnected, global environment. Following a review of fundamental principles in organization, management and leadership, key concepts for managing across borders are introduced (e.g., transnational organization, meta-national organization) and the required mindsets and competences for global leadership are discussed. Managing the complexity and diversity of MNE requires sophisticated processes for information and knowledge management. Furthermore, fundamentals of Corporate Governance and Risk Management of MNE, as well as key issues in global Human Capital Management (e.g., roles and remuneration, appraisal and performance management, talent management) are addressed. Managerial issues of international cooperation such as joint ventures as well as acquisitions as well as emerging managerial and organizational challenges for the risk management of MNE such as cyper-security or geo-political risks are discussed, with a particular focus on corporate responses to climate change. While referring to state-of-the-art academic research, the course is built around the case study of NSG Group (https://www.nsg.com/en/) and the personal experience of the lecturer in international business.
