授業の概要と方法

The aim of English for International Studies is to develop a high-level command of English which will allow students to deepen their knowledge of International Relations. Students engage in an active learning process through an integrated approach to reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills. Among these skills, EIS I focuses particularly on reading skills. We will read From Critical Thinking to Argument (2013), which illustrates critical thinking, encourages active reading, and shows how to get deeper into arguments. We will also view several great speeches of the 20th and the 21st century. Based on argumentative theories provided by this book, we will analyze these speeches and discuss the rhetorical strategies used to persuade people to make specific changes in the world. Students will give a presentation on a speech of their choice and write a 1000-word research paper on the speech. While exploring these speeches, students will enhance critical thinking and learn the basic features of civic discourse as well as improving their writing and presentation skills.
