Course Outline and Method

The aim of Intensive English III is to increase students' command of general academic English in the areas of writing and grammar. Students will gain practice and confidence in planning, drafting and revising a variety of academic genres combining macro-level skills on the textual level with micro-level skills on the sentence level. In class, students will analyze samples of good writing, plan their response to a given writing task and collaboratively develop texts that summarize pertinent information, compare and evaluate different sources, and support their arguments. Students will also gain practice with task types generally included in standardized exams. Formative evaluation is made through class participation, including small quizzes and assignments.

Student Attainment Objectives

1. Students will be able to respond accurately and appropriately to a range of different writing tasks they may face during their studies and their future careers both domestically and abroad.

2. Students will be able to tailor their writing to an international audience, structure their writing logically and apply conventions of academic or formal writing.

3. On the micro-level, students will be able to use complex grammar to create flow, a broad range of vocabulary to add precision to their writing, and accurate punctuation and mechanics to enhance their professional image.
