授業の概要と方法

 [ Theme ] Basic theories of international relations-Getting acquainted with analytical methods and historical cases

 [ Class Summary ]   International politics relates to the well-being of our daily lives a great deal through issues of security, the international economy, and the global agenda, including climate change and pandemics. A better understanding of international politics will require close observation of the traditional military power and complex interactions between various transnational factors. The concepts and methods developed in international relations for analyzing different aspects of global politics provide valuable tools for identifying problems and exploring solutions in real life.
This seminar offers an overview of notable theories and approaches that characterize international relations and examines historical case studies.
The class takes place based on text material. Students will present, in each session, the designated subject, followed by the instructor's commentary and class discussion.

Students will be able;
(1) To understand the basic concepts and analytical methods on international politics
(2) To become familiarized with notable historical case studies
(3) To understand the efficacy and limitations of analytical exercise and the use of historical analogy
(4) To develop interests in various aspects of global politics

Knowledge of world history or philosophy at the high school curriculum level will be helpful but not mandatory

授業実施形態

BCP停止の場合は、BCPレベル0~2の記載どおりに授業が行われます。
During the suspension period of BCP, classes will be as described in BCP levels 0-2.

All 15 classes are on-line-classes (real-time), irrespective of the BCP level.

*The Liberal Arts Seminar will be offered online for a total of 15 sessions.
Students may take the course from any environment where they can concentrate and participate in class.
Classrooms are prepared only at the campus where the person in charge of the class belongs.
You will need to bring your own PC and earphones if you choose to take the course in the classroom.

授業外学習の指示

Intensive reading of the text material is most important. Getting familiar with media reports and commentaries on contemporary global politics is also advisable.

Term report (50%)
The report topic will be related to the Seminar's contents.
Accessing students’ understanding of a subject relating to the seminar’s contents, also on whether the argument shows logically and persuasively.
Everyday evaluation (50%)
Students' attitudes and performance in class, including their presentations and reports, are considered.
