Course Outline and Method

The purpose of this course is the learning of academic English through the medium of oral communication. It is four-skills based focused upon speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as critical thinking to help students effectively communicate and understand academic topics and literature, etc. in the English language. Its objectives are to learn useful strategies and skills in order to be able to engage in an academic subject, critically think about its content and then constructively speak, read and/or write about it. Skills include vocabulary building, skimming and scanning, the identification of main and supporting ideas, evaluation of content, distinguishing facts from opinions, identifying the intentions of the materials dealt with, attitude towards a topic, the purposes of materials listened to or read, and the comparison and contrast of ideas on a particular issue. Speaking skills include building and using vocabulary, developing listening skills, exploring the depth and range of a subject by analyzing and speaking about it, as well as reading to support the ideas presented on a particular topic. In addition, students will also learn the tools of critical thinking and argumentation, engage in discussion through pair practise, group and/or class discussion (only in face-to-face classes), as well as the learning of various deeper aspects of the English language from a linguistic perspective such as selected aspects of grammar, etc. The course is interactive (only in face-to-face classes), consisting of instructor-based lectures, individual and group work, discussion (group & class), in-class work, homework assignments and tests, etc.

Note: Because this term/semester the course is web-based - ZOOM Meetings & on-demand, many exercises will be done by way of writing, etc.

Each lesson will include the learning of specific skills together with supporting activities designed to re-enforce the language learning process such as speaking

and pronunciation, listening, reading, writing and content discussion, the learning of new subject related academic vocabulary, and the viewing and listening to of associated multimedia materials (i.e. audio CDs & DVDs, etc.) to enhance the power of the subjects being covered.

The subjects covered are theme-based and deal with such topics as art/music, natural history/anthropology, psychology/sociology, world history (traditional)/ archeaology and interdisciplinary subjects, etc. In Term 1, the first 2 units (Units 1-2) of the textbook will be covered.

The overall approach is linguistic and cognitive (thinking) concentrating upon discourse (speaking/listening) as well as reading, writing, thinking and study skills, while at the same time stimulating intellectual interest through provocative subject matter in an English language environment.

NOTE: THIS COURSE WILL BE CONDUCTED ENTIRELY ONLINE VIA ZOOM.

Grading Evaluation Method

Grades will be awarded on the basis of in-class work, written assignments (notebook/journal), one examination, an individual presentation [PowerPoint] and participation. All students will be expected to attend class regularly (download and do their assignments each week) and actively participate in all its activities (see explanation below). The distribution of marks in the course consists of four components:

1. In-class Work & Homework Exercises (Notebook/Journal) — Maximum of 20 Marks
2. Mid-term Exam — Maximum of 40 Marks
3. Individual Presentation [PowerPoint] — Maximum of 20 Marks
4. Participation (Attendance & Participation) — Maximum of 20 Marks

Note: More information about the Individual Presentations [PowerPoint] will be given at a later time in the course.

Attendance

I will gather attendance information each week from Manavi. On Manavi when a student reads a notification in relation to course assignments and information, it is recorded and can be viewed at a later time by the instructor. If you have not read the information and/or downloaded the necessary files, it is noted. Failure to do this will show as being absent and you will lose marks. All students have access to Manavi and whether you download information on the day of the course, before or after, it is recorded. So please make sure you read notifications (e-mail) and download the assignments when necessary, etc.

Other Comments

Academic Honesty

Students are expected to do their own work at all times. You may discuss your homework with your classmates, but you must not do work for your classmates or allow your classmates to do work for you: submitted work must be original. Copying some or all of other people’s work is plagiarism, which is absolutely not tolerated. If you copy from another student or permit another student to copy from you, you will both receive zero for that work. If you copy work from other sources without citing it, you will receive a zero mark for that work as well. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence that may have severe consequences.

Classroom Etiquette

Respect for the teacher in the course is important even if it is online on the web. He or she is the one who is imparting the knowledge required for learning. Disrespect or rudeness will not be tolerated through e-mail correspondence or otherwise. The teacher is here to help you, not to abuse.

This course syllabus is subject to change depending on student needs and the ongoing pandemic situation.
