Course Outline and Method

We live in a media-saturated world: advertising, communication, information, and entertainment. This vast infiltration into our everyday lives means that the media not only provide communication and entertainment, but the media now also shape the way we conceptualize ourselves and the world around us. For societal observers, the media can therefore serve as valuable sources for examining other cultures and societies. In this class students will take on the role of cultural observers and learn about North American culture and society by examining various forms of media from the United States and Canada.
