授業の概要と方法

The aim of English for International Studies is to develop a high-level command of English, which will allow students to deepen their knowledge of international relations. In EIS IV, students engage in an active learning process through an integrated approach to the four skills using materials related to international relations with particular focus on language output skills in a multicultural context. They will learn academic writing skills with APA style and write literature reviews, research proposals, reports and papers. Formative evaluation is performed through in-class writings and two or more of the above documents, based on a rubric that targets writing skills.
This is an intermediate writing course for non-native English speakers, which is designed to expand students' competency in writing. Students will be guided through the steps of writing to produce well-organized and clearly developed essays that are essential to academic writing in English. Students will be provided with opportunities to practice the process of writing including pre-writing, drafting, editing, reading, self-editing and peer-editing. Emphasis will be given to appropriate word choices, varied sentence patterns, clear organizational patterns, understanding plagiarism and how to avoid it, and the use of in-text citations and references when writing papers.

受講生の到達目標

1. Students will enhance their academic integrity by learning how to cite works and write reference lists.
2. Students will be able to summarize facts and arguments related to international society and write reports and papers after researching the issues.
3. Students will be able to write about international societal facts and make logical, persuasive assertions within a culturally diverse context.
