授業の概要と方法

I am originally a humanitarian-development specialist as well as a peacebuilding worker of the United Nations, who have spent more than half of my life time in various countries and continents. I believe I am still one of them, who is well equipped with sustainable development studies (luckily with a background in “science”). So, as my comparative advantage, let me also share my real (funny, unique?) experience and stories in the UN system - along with some critical SD theories - how sustainable development and sustaining peace do/do not work, and how you can join such precious, global opportunities in your future. I believe, sustainable development means good changes/transformation “for all”, and especially for now, making things better for our “planet”.

In class, I give an overview of the broad themes and schools of sustainable development studies (including sustainable peace studies), including security and human rights. I also want to encourage students (the next generation) to pursue and express their own beliefs and innovative ideas. This requires "active listening skills" as well. I would like to have a dialogue with you, exploring your interests, hopes, and awareness of issues such as climate change, COVID-19, and digital transformation (DX) in the global era. In class, we will do simulation exercises, game exercises, and role-playing exercises to help you digest complex issues and theories.

Importantly, students shall have the “academic” opportunities i.e. to write a short paper, and present your views/opinions based on some academic theories/concepts and/or practical experience. Certainly, the aim is for making positive changes for “future”. This course also aims to empower you, and familiarize you with solution-based studies/scenarios/programming for our common future.

*I will provide feedback on assignments as much as possible through interactive lectures and participative seminars in this module, and via Manaba & meetings during office hours. See you in the GSS, and I ensure that we have a fun and exciting time together.
