授業の概要と方法
This seminar is designed to provide students with qualitative research skills to prepare an undergraduate thesis, especially in transnational sociology, including the crossing-border movement of people, goods, images, and popular culture. Based on the discipline of transnational sociology that avoids viewing people, things, culture, and social phenomena in the confinement of nation-states, students will learn various skills and methodologies to study global mobility and the lifeworlds of non-state actors as research subjects.
With the basic knowledge of qualitative research methods, this course reviews various works drawn upon ethnography or interview methods on migration, cross-border marriage, the transborder flow of goods, and popular culture. In doing so, the course intends for students to gain conceptual and practical levels of understanding in qualitative research methods, such as collecting data, scaling down the research focus, and converting it into an operational level of research question or hypothesis.
Students interested in writing an undergraduate thesis about either international labour migration and people’s cross-border mobility in and outside Japan or the flow of images, information, and popular culture across borders are welcome to take this seminar. Moreover, students keen to write an undergraduate thesis regarding a specific social phenomenon or organizations inside or outside Japan through in-depth interviews, the participatory observation method, and analysis of first-hand data (i.e. interview narratives, a questionnaire, bulletins of an organization) are also encouraged to consider joining the seminar.
受講生の到達目標
2)Students will acquire the skills needed for qualitative research methods, which can be effectively adapted to their research subjects, guiding them to answer the research questions they have adequately formulated.
3)Students will design their thesis proposals and establish their original perspectives to conduct on-site research and data-gathering activities.
4)Students will complete an undergraduate thesis according to the basic principles instructed in the entire course.
5)Students will be able to build a safe and reciprocal learning community with their peers through, for example, the development of skills to work collaboratively with other seminar members and provide constructive feedback to them.

This course takes an opening seminar style. Students are expected to enroll in the course for at least four semesters to complete an undergraduate thesis. In the first two semesters, students are equipped with delimiting their research interests, developing a feasible research plan, and different qualitative research methods while immersing themselves in various academic works employing ethnography and in-depth interview methods. Students are expected to formulate detailed research proposals and mini-thesis reports in the last two semesters.
