授業の概要と方法

This course develops language skills through a content-based pedagogy. Content draws from authors who cover a wide range of issues with a global society perspective. All four language skills are integrated in the exploration of relevant issues, with a particular focus on academic writing ability. Students will improve their ability to express logical argument through engagement with a range of writing techniques and structures. In-class writing activities will also promote fluency and accuracy in written expression .The content area is "Discriminatory behavior in global contexts." It asks the question: "How does discrimination affect a country's global image?" The instructor provides examples and explanations of Gender and LGBT+ discrimination in global society. The spread of the #MeToo movement as a global phenomenon prompts a focus on one particular type of discrimination: sexual harassment in workplace and institutional contexts. What have global organizations said about these issues and what policies have been implemented to achieve more justice and equality for targets of discrimination? These issues are elaborated through academic reading, and writing. Communicating your ideas about these topics in open-ended discussion will improve your speaking and listening skills in English.

受講生の到達目標

1) Students shall learn about discourse structure, conventional academic report design, citations and references, paraphrasing, quotations, and academic honesty.
2) Students will learn about different academic writing styles and writing to different audiences using the APA format.
3) Students will be able to summarize facts and arguments related to International Society - with a focus on gender and LGBT issues - and write reports after researching the issues.
While this course emphasizes writing skills, students shall continue to develop all four skills in English.
