Course Outline and Method

This course will focus on Emotional Intelligence (EI). Emotional Intelligence provides the most important key to your career and personal success, and by extension of all international relations. EI is the ability to perceive, use, understand, and manage emotions. A study (at Harvard Business School, 2001) concluded EI matters twice as much as IQ and technical skills when determining who will be successful in life. However, despite its importance, most individuals haven’t been taught how to develop this aspect of themselves. EI is a competency that can be learned. For example, students dealing with challenging feedback, tight deadlines, relationship management, navigating change, and dealing with setbacks and failure could all benefit from establishing core emotional intelligence competencies.

In international relations field, the nature of emotions fundamentally helps to shape rationality and how we think about world politics, diplomacy, human rights, social issues, health, environment, and security, etc. because emotions permeate the complex challenges of the relations of states with each other.

Throughout this course, along with understanding the research support for EI, you will be expected to examine and improve your emotional intelligence by participating in a variety of activities and exercises.

Advice to Students on Study and Research Methods

Since EQ is so important to life success and workplace, it’s essential to practice these skills while you are in college! Here’s how I expect you to demonstrate EQ behaviors in class and the EQ dimensions they reflect:
1. Be willing to better understand yourself and why you react to certain situations as you do (emotional self-awareness, self-regard, reality testing, problem solving)
2. Come to every class and be fully prepared (self-actualization, social responsibility, stress tolerance, self-regard)
3. Accept responsibility for your behavior (emotional self-awareness, self-regard, problem solving, impulse control, stress tolerance, optimism)
4. Work effectively with me and your classmates and resolve conflict, if it occurs, in a respectful and constructive way (emotional self-awareness, self-regard, social responsibility, interpersonal relationship, empathy, assertiveness, independence, flexibility, problem solving, reality testing, stress tolerance, impulse control, and optimism); in other words – almost every EQ skill area.
