授業の概要と方法

All classes will be live-streamed during the assigned class day and period. Any change in that later in the semester will be announced.

Each week the next week's assignments will be announced in class. If a student is absent from a class, the student is still responsible for that homework and for the homework for the next week. A student can contact the teacher by email to find out what the assignment is.

****KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR TEACHER at sar12202@fc.ritsumei.ac.jp.

This course is an English skills-based course. The content material will be on international development.

NOTE: This is not a personal-opinion-discussion class. The class is for learning concepts and systems in international development. These are necessary concepts to know for international relations. You must know them if you are going to work with development.

The textbook is written at a native-speaker level. Students will need to read the text and analyze the reading. They must learn the concepts so that they can recognize them and explain them on quizzes in class. The teacher will provide worksheets to use for studying the textbook. In addition, the extra articles are all written for native speakers, so students will need to apply reading skills to understand them, also.

Methods will be the following: homework reading of the material using study sheets, in-class small-group study and discussion of the concepts, short lectures and explanations, answering student questions based on the text, and individual and/or small-group research and presentations.

There will be content tests to evaluate listening and reading skills.

The schedule below is flexible. It will be followed as closely as possible, but as the term goes on, it may be changed somewhat if change is needed.

受講生の到達目標

In building English skills to study international development, if targets are reached, students will

1) develop their comprehension of English reading materials in the field of international development,

2) develop their English listening comprehension,

3) improve their note-taking skills in English,

4) learn to effectively research and report information in English and

5) develop analytical and critical thinking skills for evaluating, summarizing, and synthesizing information in English,

6) improve ability to follow and add to whole-class and small-group discussions in English.

If content objectives are achieved, students will add to their knowledge the concepts and information presented in at least chapters 1-8 of the textbook.

授業外学習の指示

Homework is important. Students must do the homework assignments and readings and research. Class participation will depend on homework completion. Classmates will depend upon their fellow classmates, so all students need to complete the homework.

Homework problems? Write immediately to the teacher for help: sar12202@fc.ritsumei.ac.jp.

Attendance: Ritsumeikan University policy

Positive participation: See "Note" below.

It would be sincerely appreciated if only students willing to commit to following positive participation rules sign up for this class. Fellow classmates will need the help and cooperation of all of their classmates.

成績評価方法(備考)

Positive participation means

1) supporting classmates by respecting their ideas and by speaking to them in English only,

2) listening when it is time to listen,

3) speaking when asked for responses,

4) using only English in all interaction in from the moment of stepping foot into the classroom until the moment of stepping foot into the hallway,

5) being prepared for each class and for special assignments with the best work possible, and

6) bringing the necessary tools to class (for example, dictionary, paper, pencil/pen, notebook, text -- either hard copy or accessible soft copy).

Positive participation also means respecting the system of the classroom -- 'attending' all classes, being on time, listening when being spoken to by any member of the class, doing outside work in order to be able to answer and contribute in class, and contributing helpful comments when asked either individually or in a group.

The Ritsumeikan attendance policy in general:

The university policy is that a student cannot receive credit for the course if he/she misses more than one-third of the classes. Also, note that attendance includes being on time. Three times of being tardy is counted as one absence. If a student is tardy, he/she is missing part of class. This adds up.

Regarding attendance in this class specifically:

The Ritsumeikan policy does not mean that someone who attends 2/3 of the classes will pass. In fact, if a student who misses more than one or two of the classes in this course, will find it very difficult to pass the course. Every class session has a lot of information that cannot be gotten without being in class. Also, missing one or two sessions may mean that a quiz is missed, and quizzes cannot be made up.

受講および研究に関するアドバイス

Be careful of the sources you use for your presentations and group discussions. Use these guidelines:

1) Keep all bibliographic information of everything you read in your research. [Bibliographic information will be explained in class.]

2) Do not only choose the easiest-to-find sources. However, do choose sources you understand.

3) Look for dependable, strong sources with expert information.

4) Use only English sources. NOTE: Though I realize that you may feel that Japanese sources are more helpful to you in content, please rememeber that this is an English class. So, gaining in English is more important than gaining content information. Japanese sources do not give you English input. If you use English sources, they will give you models of English vocabulary and models of English sentence structures. So, please use English sources only.

参考書(使用頻度、その他補足)

Students should bring a dictionary to every class. It may be electronic or in book form. In my experience, electronic dictionaries may be easy to carry, but they often give incorrect translations going from Japanese to English. In my experience, the book dictionary does not have such problem. Either is okay in the class, though.

You do not need to print this out for the class unless you wish to. If we are able to be on campus, I may be able to give you a copy. Also, we will only use about half or less of the book, so if you print it out, don't print out all of it. The glossary is important, though.
