授業の概要と方法


This seminar is designed for students who plan to write their bachelor thesis using empirical tools. We will cover data analysis methods and technique on which students are expected to base their research. Throughout this course, students will also explore and deepen their knowledge and understanding of how the study of economics approaches various issues in the world.
The main aim of this course is to help equip students with skills to carry out data analysis for their topics of interest. Economic theories will also be introduced. Students are expected to choose a subject area for their thesis and conduct research based on empirical analysis and economics.

The goals of this seminar are to help students acquire skills in data analysis, expand their understanding of economic theory, develop presentation skills and write an effective research paper.

事前に履修しておくことが望まれる科目

There are no prerequisite courses, but basic knowledge in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Statistics will be useful.

Seminar Management Method

Specific topics to be covered will be decided at the first session based on students’ interests. In general, this seminar will start with a number of sessions introducing basic economic theories and statistics. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with key concepts in economics and statistics.
3rd year students: Focus will be on discussions of economic approach to answering questions, covering various topics. Students will learn how to use basic statistics and data analysis tools, such as statistical software R. One main goal is for students to enhance their presentation skills. Students are expected to start narrowing down their research questions by studying and reporting existing literature related to their topic of interest.
4th year students: Focus will be on presenting and writing papers based on economics concepts and previous studies on their topics, using empirical research methods. A great focus will be on brushing up students’ writing skills. Students are to give an oral presentation of their findings and finish writing their thesis.
Throughout the course, students are expected to prepare papers outlining key features of their thesis including a working title, background and motivation, literature review, research design and references. We will then move on to structuring, drafting, revising and finalizing their thesis under the instructor’s guidance.
