授業の概要と方法

【+R-Jugyo】
Information for “+R-Jugyo” will be posted on the “Course News” on manaba+R by September 20. Be sure to check the “Course News” on manaba+R.

This course provides the foundation of peace studies by introducing basic concepts and approaches to various peace-related issues. The course covers how to analyze the causes of war and how to prevent it and build “negative peace”. It will be followed by the focus on “structural violence” including poverty, discrimination, and social injustice, and discussion on how to achieve “positive peace.”
To demonstrate a concrete approach to the problem of peace, the latter half of the course will apply the concepts of peace studies to the cases of Hiroshima and Okinawa and consider the costs of war and the conditions for achieving peace. Students also learn how to address the peace-related problems and how to analyze them by using the concepts through group work and presentation. Based on the group work, each student writes a final paper to demonstrate their individual research outcomes and analysis. The audience is encouraged to offer questions or comments which help each presenter to develop their argument in the paper.
Each class generally consists of a lecture and group discussion for active learning. By exchanging views and opinions, students can encounter diverse ways of thinking, broaden their horizons, and develop their own ideas.

受講生の到達目標

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- explain different aspects of peace based on academic research.
- discuss the complexity, efforts and challenges of peacemaking and peacebuilding in reality.
- exchange opinions with classmates constructively and develop one’s own argument.
