授業の概要と方法

This advanced seminar is designed to provide bachelor students with an in-depth study of issues related to development and/or the environment in the developing world. Driven by the forces of globalization, the 21st century humanity has been facing a series of global challenges such as uneven distribution of wealth, the expansion of economic crisis, overpopulation, terrorism, nuclear threats, climate change, infectious diseases, and so forth. Social sciences are particularly suited to analyzing a multitude of social factors and mechanisms leading to such global challenges, and also apt for thinking of possible solutions to them. In the seminar, students are encouraged to engage in at least two social science disciplinary (for example, political science and anthropology) literature/perspectives. In doing so purposefully, they can gain multifaceted perspectives/thinking on the complex and intertwined repercussions among actors, objects, issues, and venues involved in a topic of their interests.
       Students receive research guidance from their academic adviser to pursue their study and research. Presentations and discussions will be held in class.

受講生の到達目標

By completion of the course, students will be able to:
- develop the ability to establish a good research plan;
- acquire the skills to base research on at least two social science disciplinary approaches;
- acquire and address their data in a fruitful manner, according to the framework they have built;
- present their research in an effective manner; and
- accomplish a valuable final bachelor thesis.

事前に履修しておくことが望まれる科目

Students must be clear about what topic of interest they would like to pursue in the field of development/environmental studies, on what social science disciplines they would like to base their research, and which research methods (e.g., fieldwork, statistical analysis) they need to employ.

Seminar Management Method

Year 3 (1st semester): In the first several seminars, participants will present a summary of the article of their interest. After that, they will develop and present their research plan based on the reading of relevant literature. At the end of the semester, participants will submit a term report on the chosen topic of the graduation thesis.

Year 3 (2nd semester): While continuing with the reading of relevant literature, participants will further polish their research plan and begin to write up papers that will be the building blocks of their gradation thesis.

Year 4 (3rd semester): Participants will carry out the research plan while further developing graduation thesis chapters.

Year 4 (4th semester): Participants will complete the writing of their graduation thesis, based on their research findings.
