This course is an intensive reading course focused on the field of African American Studies. Interdisciplinary in nature, African American Studies embraces not only its history and researches, but also the political, economic, sociological, physiological, and philosophical understandings of the world we live in.
As an introductory course, we will read various news articles, interviews of some famous African American intellectuals, speeches, and black vernacular traditions, explore the experience of African Diaspora, and evaluate their movement for liberation, self-determination, and the assertion of equal rights in human history.
Each session is to be divided into two parts:
( 1 ) In this part, we will learn English by listening and reading various news articles, which will help expand your knowledge of journalistic English and allow you to be aware of what is going on in the world.
( 2 ) In this workshop unit, we will focus on reading various materials of civics, politics, U.S. history, and black vernacular culture. Contemporary reclamation of “hidden” history or “oral” story will also be emphasized. Also, we will read variety of speeches (of R.F. Kennedy, King, Obama and more), mini-lectures (by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Cornel West, Colin Powel, Kofi Annan, Maya Angelou, Whoopi Goldberg), and articles regarding to racial matters, such as racial profiling, police violence, presidential elections 2008 and 2016, military and minorities, economic disparity, gun control, hate groups, and so on.
