授業の概要と方法

In this class, students study social security policy from the viewpoint of economics.

Social security systems, including pensions, medical care, nursing care, and livelihood protection, may seem like systems that are far removed from us, but they play an extremely important role in times of crisis, supporting people unable to live safely due to illness, aging, death, childbirth, unemployment, nursing care, poverty, and other reasons.

This class is conducted using an active learning method called the “case method”, where the teacher and students discuss the topic (case) presented by the teacher. For example, one case is young people’s demonstration with the claim of ¥1500 minimum wage, and another case is that the local government faces tax delinquency. In addition, we often conduct statistical quizzes during class.

Before each class (from the 2nd week), students are required to submit a preparation report (about half a page on A4 paper). This accounts for 20% of the grade. I explain how to submit preparation reports in the first lecture.

We use knowledge of economics (such as demand and supply curves), but we will proceed with appropriate explanations, so you can take the class even if you have no prior knowledge of economics.

受講生の到達目標

The goal is to gain a better understanding of the social security system through discussing real issues in pensions, medical care, and poverty. Another goal is to understand how to employ economics tool such as demand curves to think about social issues.
