Recommendations for Private Study

1. This class requires at-home preparation. For "reading" weeks, you will not read the texts in class. Read each text carefully before you come to class and ensure you understand it fully. If you have any questions about the reading, write them down so you can ask your instructor. Write down some ideas, thoughts or opinions you have about the reading as well so you can discuss it during class time. For "writing" weeks, you will only complete the writing task in class. Complete the activities before the writing task at home and write down any questions you have.
2. Complete any activities skipped during class at home.
3. Review and preview your textbook for each week of class. Write down any words or expressions you do not know and look up their meaning. If you have questions, write them down so you can ask your instructor in class.
4. Use the online workbook to review the textbook activities, and complete practice activities even if they are not assigned as homework.
5. Prepare to summarize what you learned each week in a short speech; you may be asked to speak in front of the class.
6. Keep a record of new words, phrases, and grammar (either in a notebook or in a mobile device) and review it frequently.
7. Practice listening, reading and writing at home as much as you can. Find books, videos or articles at your English level and review them several times with a dictionary. When you write, write in full sentences using new words you have learned.
8. Find a TOEIC application or textbook that works for you and use it to prepare for taking the TOEIC. Focus especially on test taking methods and building vocabulary.

Advice to Students on Study and Research Methods

1. Come to class prepared with your textbook and any additional materials each day. Before coming to class, research any English you do not know, and write down any questions you have.
2. Each day there will be an initial and final speaking activity. You may be asked to speak, so be prepared to do so in every class.
3. If your instructor asks a question or confirms whether students are following along, do not stay silent – answer the question, or respond with “yes” or “no.”
4. When your instructor asks you a question, respond within 3 seconds.
5. If you do not understand something, ask a question – your classmates may have the same question.
6. We are all learning – ask your classmates for help, and help your classmates when you can.
