授業の概要と方法

The emphasis of the English program is REACH which stands for Responsibility, Environment, Awareness, Collaboration, and Humanitarianism. The English stream is to prepare students to be aware of differing cultures, to be become more responsible and collaborative with others through using English. The goal of this Stream is to prepare students to use English in social and working environments.
In Study Skills 21, students practice reading passages of a variety of topics with a purpose of acquiring reading and critical thinking skills. They are supposed to read effectively and thoroughly the assigned passages using background knowledge, reading strategies, and appropriate tools (e.g., dictionaries). Based on the information they get from reading, they work on learning activities such as listing key points, preparing a summary, making visual organizers, pointing out issues, classifying claims, offering extra explanations, and sharing their own (critical) views in class. You are supposed to prepare each class, submit assignment, and take quizzes and exams in accordance with your teacher’s instruction. Your teacher will provide feedback in the physical classroom or on manaba+R, depending on the activity.
The level of this class is IM (Intermediate).

受講生の到達目標

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
・understand English passages using background knowledge, dictionaries, and/or peer support
・use important reading strategies such as predicting, scanning and skimming for quick responses
・identify the main idea, details, and examples, and also distinguish fact from opinion
・take notes and make graphic organizers to reconstruct the content in your own ways
・use the information you read to look at an issue from different angles and present your own views

授業実施形態

All classes will be conducted in person.

授業外学習の指示

For every class, you have reading assignments due. Be sure to read all assigned texts and work on tasks before we discuss them in class. You are expected to come to class prepared.
When you read at home, use your dictionaries, take notes and underline in your book, and then come to class ready to ask questions in class.
You are responsible for any information you miss when absent.
Use the audio recording of the texts to enhance your learning.

Active participation in all class activities is required. You are supposed to bring your textbook to every class.
