Course Outline and Method

The aim of IES VI is to increase students' command of general academic English in the areas of writing and grammar. Students will need to master rhetorical context skills and the responding to implication and inference. Students will gain practice and confidence in manipulating the basic building blocks of successful writing at the sentence, paragraph, and textual level. In class, students will engage in practice activities from TOFEL preparation texts. By in-depth analysis and guided discussion, it will be possible to improve individual proficiency skills in preparation for standardized tests.

Student Attainment Objectives

Students will learn about the key components of good writing according to academic standards. In addition to gaining an understanding of the most important issues regarding grammar, spelling, and vocabulary items, they will also come to understand key features of good writing: accuracy, authority, integrity, and problems in usage. This knowledge is applied in the practice activities from the TOEFL IBT test.
