授業の概要と方法

This course is equivalent to "Urban Housing and Policy." The class is divided into two parts. The first half of the class covers the theoretical issues related to urbanization, housing, and policy. Starting from the period of rapid urbanization in industrial cities in the late 19th century, the course focuses on understanding the historical evolution of modern cities, the land use patterns of city areas, characteristics of urban housing, the emergence of urban/housing problems, and public efforts, and recent issues of urbanization and shrinking cities around the world. This half of the class tends to employ socio-economic and spatial viewpoints of understanding urban housing so that students obtain fundamental knowledge that can be applied to understanding the housing conditions of different cities and countries.

The second half of the class focuses on understanding and learning from the urban housing experiences of Japanese cities, particularly in the Kansai Metropolitan area (and cities of some other countries also covered). As these cities have experienced a long period of industrialization and urbanization, they work as a reference to understand the process of urbanization and housing development and provide a background for discussing how housing development styles differ among cities and times.
