授業の概要と方法

How do diverse societies recall their past? This course will explore important key global issues through the interdisciplinary lens of the construct of ‘cultural collective memory’, and the diverse ways in which different cultures understand and maintain certain memories, memorialize particular events, and forget others.

After an introduction to various theories of collective memory, course sessions will focus on selected historical/global issues and explore the transformation of memory over time in each case
.
Students will investigate the notion of sites and practices of memory through narratives, texts, symbols, rituals, and latterly, the internet and social media, and will draw on an engaging variety of source materials and documentaries.

Evaluation is cumulative, based on students' efforts towards participation in our learning community, assignments, and a final case-study presentation based on students' research into the topic. Feedback is delivered individually via reflection sheets.

受講生の到達目標

By the end of this course, students will:
- have grasped the notion that many challenging current global issues have deep historical roots
- have learned about core concepts of memory studies
- understand how the construct of collective memory connects to critical global issues, and will be able to discuss these complex issues from a more nuanced perspective
- have developed their discursive and analytical skills in relation to the analysis of complex issues
- be able to build networks with other students as they research and present together on projects in a learning community
