授業の概要と方法

This course introduces disaster management for cities based on academic research and lessons learned from past events. The course provides information on all elements of disaster management and also explains “resilience” which is defined by UNDRR as "the ability of a system, community or society exposed to hazards to resist, absorb, accommodate, adapt to, transform and recover from the effects of a hazard in a timely and efficient manner, including through the preservation and restoration of its essential basic structures and functions through risk management."

As disaster management and resilience are important parts of sustainable urban policies and because decision maker(s) only develop only one disaster policy after considering the alternatives, the course also examines the factors involved in disaster management decision-making.

受講生の到達目標

Students may be familiar with disasters from the news or from their own experience. However, this course examines disasters from academic and policy perspectives based on the following two sub-goals:
1. To understand important disaster management concepts; and
2. To understand the challenges associated with developing resilience and disaster management policies, and to create possible future perspectives.
