Topic: Foreign direct investment in Japan

Japanese multinational companies are renowned for their global influence. Meanwhile, Japan itself is a charming market for foreign firms, offering various unique opportunities and challenges for these firms to enter and thrive. In this course, students will learn and explore the nature of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Japan. This will involve active participation in lectures and individual or group presentations centered on aspects pertinent to FDI in Japan.

During the lectures, we will cover (1) the extent and history of FDI in Japan, (2) the surge in inward FDI, (3) Japan's economic growth and FDI, (4) the performance of foreign firms and the macroeconomic impact of FDI, and (5) the prospects for FDI in Japan. Students will be required to read assigned chapters in advance, and discuss with the lecturer as well as peer students how they grasp the key points highlighted in the chapter. In the presentation part, students will be tasked with presenting their own case study on any of the discussed topics or other relevant themes, linking theories to realities.

Student Attainment Objectives

By taking this course, students are expected to gain a comprehensive understanding of FDI in Japan from both historical and contemporary perspectives. In doing so, they will be able to understand real-life cases of foreign firms operating in Japan and their broader impact on Japan's economic growth as well as the globalization of Japanese society.
