Course Outline and Method

Intersectionality, Representation, and Power
Our individual sense of identity and our perception of others are both based on a number of intersecting concepts such as gender, race, and class. These perceptions are not merely personal, internal attitudes; they also impact interpersonal behavior. Our treatment of our fellow human beings can have real effects on the well-being of others, especially when some of us hold more powerful positions than others. In this course, we will examine how such perceptions and behavior are represented in mass media and how such representations may affect our judgment. By the end of the course, you should have a better understanding of the concepts of intersectionality, representation, and power.
This course is student-focused, with short introductory lectures followed by weekly pair and group work. This course is open to both PS and CRPS students.
