授業の概要と方法

(Peacemakers of the 20th Century)

The theme of this course is peacemakers of the 20th century. It deals with those individuals who have had a significant impact upon world culture and have contributed to the betterment of life and society through the avocation of peace and non-violence. It will look at five figures: Chiune Sugihara, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr., many who have been the recipient of such world-class awards as the Nobel Prize. Emphasis will be placed upon the socio-political aspects of their lives and how they have influenced global society in relation to politics, peace, human rights, and religion, etc. They will be examined in the context of the 20th century as well as their continuing influence upon the peace process in the 21st century. Focus will be placed not only on their lives, but upon important background information necessary for an understanding of the context in which the events of their lives have taken place, as well as the peace process as a whole.

The subjects will be dealt with and discussed within an academic context applying the tools of critical thinking and argumentation in an English language environment. This course is interactive, consisting of a series of instructor-based lectures, individual student presentations, as well as in-class work and homework assignments, etc.

Its approach is linguistic and cognitive concentrating upon discourse as well as reading, writing and research skills (inclusive of computer assisted learning), while at the same time stimulating intellectual interest through provocative subject matter.

受講および研究に関するアドバイス

Because this course requires active participation by all students involved, it is necessary to keep up with weekly readings and other class work in order to understand materials and ideas presented. In addition, it is also necessary to keep a regular journal (part of the course requirements), so that it can become an active tool for learning and thinking, where one can record answers to worksheet/exercises, express one's ideas about materials dealt with, articulate any concerns or problems, as well as use it for the development of individual oral reports and record other assignments, etc.
