Course Outline and Method

This selective undergraduate course is designed to provide the basic, practical, and beneficial themes of communication while covering the basic theory of nonverbal communication with a multidisciplinary perspective. The lectures and multimedia materials including online resources enhance the understanding of intercultural communication. Throughout the course, the enrolled students are expected to construct glocal (global + local) views of the principle of cultural reciprocity. The course format makes use of lectures and online discussions as well as experiential learning activities to identify and explain important theoretical concepts and to highlight practical applications of these concepts to the student's own life experiences. A combination of text readings, lectures, in-class activities, small group projects, and out-of-class assignments will help facilitate this learning process.

Face to Face classes are basically given but in case the COVID-19 pandemic continues or worsens (BCP Level 3~4) they can be done in a hybrid style using both online (Zoom) and classroom teaching. Detailed information will be provided through Manaba+R.

Student Attainment Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Specify the nature of the relationship between verbal and nonverbal communication.
2. Understand the role of nonverbal behaviors/communication within specific contexts and relationship types.
3. Apply principles of nonverbal communication in simulated or experimental contexts.
4. Observe specific instances of nonverbal communication as it occurs in context.
5. Synthesize and apply the research on those categories or codes of nonverbal communication common to our discipline.
6. Understand the functions that nonverbal communication performs in daily interactions.
7. Through collaborative group projects, promote mutual intercultural understanding.

Advice to Students on Study and Research Methods

Attendance in class is a prerequisite for every class as no tardiness. From past experience, I can say that attendance and class participation is related to a good grade. You have a lot to lose by being absent. You are responsible for your own inability to obtain materials and lecture information due to absences. If you are late, be sure to notify the instructor.

Since English is used as the instructional language and giving lectures, prospective enrolled students need at least scores of TOEFL ITP ®400~480、TOEFL iBT®Test 32~55、TOEIC® 380~580、IELTS4.5~5.0.

Other Comments

[Notes]
- Students are expected to be punctual, alert, and ready to contribute to the class. One absence will result in a 3-point penalty and tardiness/early departures will result in a 2-point penalty.
- In general, all work turned in for credit must be word-processed, use left-justification, use a standard font type and size, and contain one-inch margins on the left, right, top, and bottom of each page. Written work should follow the American Psychological Association (APA) style (most recent edition).
- A paper given to an instructor with the student’s name on it is assumed to be in the student's own words and to represent his or her original ideas unless certain words and ideas are specifically credited to another source. A paper bearing a student's name that does not do this is plagiarized and will be considered academically dishonest.
- In general, no late papers or assignments will be accepted. Exceptions may be made for MAJOR medical and MAJOR personal problems when the instructor has been given notification at the first possible opportunity. All missed work due to an excused absence must be turned in within one week of your return to class. No papers will be accepted after the last day of instruction. There will also be no incompletes given, except in the case of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events prevented.
- Students will only be allowed to have a laptop computer or a related electronic device during class if it is not distracting to other students and if the student is using it for this classwork. If the student is discovered to be using the computer or related device to play games, prepare work for another class or activity, listen to music, and the like, during class time, the student will receive a 1-point penalty when each incident is found.
