Course Outline and Method

In order to understand the major trends in sustainable urban developments in the world, this course will introduce characteristics of sustainability of housing, community, transportation, land use, infrastructure, urban facilities, heritages, or city planning in general as practical case studies. This course will try to provide knowledge about typical cases for sustainable urban policies in terms of its objectives, effects, evaluations of the policies in European countries, Japan, and Asian countries.
In some weeks during the semester, we may collaborate with Diponegoro University (UNDIP) in Indonesia. The discussion week(s) is(are) likely to be replaced to the lectures of guest speakers from UNDIP.

Student Attainment Objectives

(1)To understand the social background suggested by each case of sustainable urban developments
(2)To explain the social context of urban policies with specific examples from the viewpoints of sustainability

Class Format

All the weeks are held by face-to-face class.

Recommendations for Private Study

In week 5, 10, and 15, students will be requested to prepare for a short presentation in accordance with the block topics. The instructor will give you assignments to study history of cities, housing issues, and infrastracture policies in your home country in these three weeks.
