Essential Writing Skills
The purpose of this course is the learning of academic English through the medium of writing. Focused on writing, it also employs the four-skills approach for studying a foreign language: speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as critical thinking to help students effectively communicate and understand academic topics and literature, etc. in the English language. Its objectives are to learn useful strategies and skills in order to be able to engage in an academic subject, critically think about its content and then constructively and effectively write about it. Skills include vocabulary building, skimming and scanning, the identification of main and supporting ideas, evaluation of content, distinguishing facts from opinions, identifying the intentions of the materials dealt with, attitude towards a topic, and the purposes of materials read. Writing skills include general proficiency in the English language, with emphasis placed on writing skills development such as how to organize and develop ideas beyond the basic sentence level, how to write in a well-structured paragraph, as well as how to construct longer pieces of writing with a clear main idea (thesis), supporting details and a conclusion, i.e. writing on personal topics and academic subjects, etc. Students will also learn common rhetorical patterns of English including comparison & contrast, cause & effect, and the support of an opinion, etc. They will also practice different stages of the writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, revising and editing. In addition, students will learn the tools of critical thinking and argumentation, as well as various deeper aspects of the English language such as grammar, etc. The course consists of instructor-based lectures,, in-class work, homework assignments and tests, etc.
Note: Because this term/semester the course is web-based, all exercises and homework assignments will be done through the medium of writing, etc.
Each lesson includes the learning of specific writing skills together with supporting activities designed to re-enforce the language learning process with the option of being able to do further exercises and practice via the internet on the textbook web site.
The overall approach of the course is linguistic and cognitive (thinking) concentrating upon reading, writing, thinking and study skills, in an intensive English language environment meeting twice a week (ZOOM Meetings).
