授業の概要と方法

Course outline
This BIS (Bridge to International Studies) III (RD) is a content language integrated learning (CLIL) course for intermediate level students. As for language skills development, it is designed as an introduction to key terms and skills for improving English for specific academic purposes. As for the content learning, it is designed to introduce key theories and approaches for Media Studies as well as issues of representation selectively using a textbook for upper secondary school students (AS level) in Britain along with an introductory textbook for college students studying Japanese Studies in the States. As is often the case with Media Studies, the main textbook exclusively uses Anglophone cases. In examining representations of gender, race & ethnicity and national identity in the media, we will compare these Anglophone cases with Japanese cases and then consider the relevance of media theory in a non-Western context. In addition to learning to ‘read’ a range of media products critically, students will have an opportunity to plan and present their own creative production.

Method
Students will read assigned reading and do a group assignment before each class meeting. In class, following a brief introductory lecture, students will review key terms, theories and approaches for Media Studies, discuss the weekly reading assignments and present their own analysis of media texts.

受講生の到達目標

By the end of the course students should be able to:

1. comprehend basic academic readings related to Media Studies and express their views and opinions in both oral and written forms;
2. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of key terms, theories and approaches for Media Studies both verbally and through production work;
3. critically ‘read’ a range of media texts to examine how and why particular groups are represented in the
media with some comparisons between Anglophone and Japanese cases;
4. learn to 'use' basic Western media theories while considering how they can be used in non-Western
contexts
5. develop communication skills to collaborate with others to complete group assignments.
